Question
HI,

I took in a homeless rabbit in January, the vet thinks he is about a year old now and a lion head cross. He has never been agressive but doesnt like being picked up. He lives mostly as a house bunny but while im at work he lives in an outdoor hutch with a 6 ft run under. I have had him neutered. I was concerned about him being lonely as when he is in the house he does like to eat wallpaper and wires eventhough he has plenty of toys and my attention. So a few weeks ago i took in a forlorn rabbit whose mate had recently died.

He hasnt been too well looked after, just fed and left in a hutch. He is overweight and has a runny poo problem, which i am trying to rectify. He is some kind of lop.He has also been neutered although when i took him to the vet last week for mixi jab he said he was 'odd' down there and wasnt 100% of the rabbits sex.

I only took him in so they would both have company, cant cope with two separate bunnies as i hate leaving them outside overnight.

For two weeks they got on lovely, grooming each other, mainly my first bunny wanting to be groomed though. Initially the first bunny just wanted to mount the second but that soon calmed down.

However i was off work a few days ago and had them both stay in the house with me when i heard a commotion. Fur was flying so i have split them up but everytime i try to re-introduce them there is a lot of kicking chasing and fur flying. It seemns to me that the second bunny was trying to mount my first funny and hes not having it. they will sniff each other then first bunny appears very nervous and attacks the second. Having never seen rabbits fight before this is just my interpretation.

Is there any point trying to get them to bond or does second bunny have to go back to his owner and both find new mates?

Thanks so much

Claire

Answer
hello claire

unfortunatly this can happen an awful lot with rabbits and if they dont get on then they are not likely to in the future. I really dont think it is a good idea to keep trying them together as if they fight more then they can do some serious harm to each other. It doesnt mean that your first bunny does not want a mate he just simple cant get along with the other bunny, i would advice you to get a spayed female rabbit, as a boy and a girl will get on much better. Try getting one around the same age and size

hope this helps
