Clearing my rabbits eye

Question
My rabbit seems to have a little piece of greenery from his alfalfa stuck in his eye. It seems he needs eye drops to clear this debri out of his eye. Do you have any suggestions on any over the counter eye drops I could possibly get at a pet store? Or would I have to make an appointment at a local vet to get a subscription for eye drops? Please help me clear my rabbits eye without having pay for the visit to the vet, thanks!

Answer
Dear Sara,

You can use over-the-counter sterile ophthalmic saline solution (NOT contact lens cleaning solution!) to flush your bunny's eye safely and wash out the foreign object, if it's still there.  It can help to slightly warm the drops, since cold water on the eye is a bit uncomfortable.

Hold the eye open and use just slight pressure to create a gentle, constant stream of solution against the eye's surface. This should loosen the particle and wash it out.

Be sure not to touch the tip of the bottle to anything, and keep it nice and sterile so you can use it again, should the need arise.

I hope this helps.
