Scab on Testicle & Flicking

Question

Peeled scab
Hi,

I have a 2.5 year old Holland lop. He has a scab on his left testicle. At first, I was not sure if it was a scab or if it was just dry, hardened poop. I picked at it a bit, but it didn't come off. Yesterday, the scab was not as hard and dark as it was today.

Today, I peeled off half of the scab, but I stopped because it was hurting my rabbit (he flinched). So now the scab is half on, half on. I have attached a picture of what it looks like. Hopefully you can see it clearly. There is a white-ish substance under half of it, you can see it slightly in the picture.

Should I just leave the scab there or should I  peel it off? Is it harmful to my rabbit? Is there anything I can do for him?

Also, my rabbit has been "flicking" a lot. When he's running, his feet will randomly flick (like when he's angry), but he's not angry. It just happens randomly. Also, he'll flick his arms a lot. I don't think he did this as much before. Is this abnormal? Does he have brain damage or something?

My rabbit still acts normal though. He'll still beg for treats, he'll still rattle the bars of his cage when he wants to get out. He'll still stand up to sniff something interesting. He has a great appetite, too.

Please let me know what to do about the scab and whether or not my rabbit is damaged somehow. Thank you!

Answer
Dear Janice,

If there is whitish matter under the scab, there could be an abscess.  I would bring your bunny to an experienced rabbit vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

who can have a closer look in person to determine whether this is something that requires further treatment.  If it's an abscess, it is more likely to get worse than improve if left without treatment.

The flicking behavior could indicate he's got something irritating his feet, and the vet can also check that.  Be sure he's running on a traction-providing surface, not something slick such as tile, linoleum, hardwood, etc., as these can cause the feet to stretch abnormally and cause foot pain over time.

If the "flicking" is accompanied by head twitches or other "jiggy" movements, thought, he might just be giving little binkies of happiness.  I can't really tell without seeing it in person.

I hope this helps.
