Question
hi i had 2 male guinea pigs aged 2 years old but sadly one got an inner ear infection and was being treated but died this morning. im worried the other guinea pig will be lonely now as he has never been on his own....i got them both together when they were babies and they have never been apart.....do i get another guinea pig to keep him company or should i let him stay on his own? i am really worried and confused as to what to do. if i should get him friend could i get a baby or does the new one have to be older? if i get another i really need to get a male so they dont breed is this ok? i would be grateful for any advice you can give me on this and thankyou very much. ben

Answer
I am so sorry your guinea pig passed away. It might be in the best interest of your guinea pig if you did get another male guinea pig that was young. A baby guinea pig would be better for him. You may notice a difference in his attitude without his friend, he may not be as happy. Generally, Guinea pigs do better with another since they are used to being in herds in the wild. I would place both in a neutral territory to introduce each other before placing them in the cage. Here is a link for further information.
