Question
QUESTION: hi please could you help us we have two guinea pigs both of which we were told were female one is approx. 1half yrs and the other 7mnths, i have gone out to the hutch this morning after being with them last night when they seamed a bit quiet, and found three babies born sometime in the night. i need some advice a.s.a.p as to feeding caring for them and with regards to the mother and father, as the mother dosen't seam to be allowing them to feed of her. I just don't know what to do HELP!!!

ANSWER: Hi chris

Dont worry just feed the mother the normal food and she will take care of them
You are meant to of taken the father out beacause as soon as she has had babies she can become pregnant again and is most likley already pregnant.
You wont see the mum feed them because she normaly does it in private
but normaly i see it a couple of times if you defintly no that she is not looking after them and they are skinny then you may have to hand feed them but the best option is just to leave them with the mum
the last option is to take them away
This is the website about handfeeding hope this helps

QUESTION: hi mitchell, thanks for the have now noticed that the babies seem to be feeding well and have seen them feeding from the mother a couple of times so am quite happy about that, the only other question that i now have is as the father is still in with them was is the best course of action with him as he seems ok around the babies and i have told(don't know how true) but you not able to sex the babies until about 4-5 weeks, if so do i wait until then to split the father with any other males or should i split him now and then add future males later bit unsure?
many thanks for your help so far
cheers chris

Answer
Hi Chris

I sex my Babies straight after they are born but it is difficult to do it a may not be correct
So normally by 2 weeks you should be able to tell
Unfortunatley
You did make a mistake, But it is ok, straight after the babies are born the mum can become pregnant again so she may be pregnant again but she amy not you will just have to wait and see
I wish you all the best with the babies and everything
Good Luck
Mitchell
