nicks/little tears in our guinea pigs ears

Question
We have recently bought two female guinea pigs who are now 8 weks old. Your
answers about someone else's fighting pigs was very helpful to us however, we
have noticed that both our girls have new little nicks in their ears as if they may
have bitten each other there. There have not been any other particular signs of
fighting though. Do we need to worry about this.

Answer
Charlotte,

The nicks a little tears on their ears is common in Guinea Pigs. Why they do it remains a mystery and many people have different options as to why they do this. As for me I think they do it just in personal experience is as a sign that they belong in this group. My youngest girl has two nicks in her ears one from the group she was with when we adopted her and one from my oldest when she became her cage mate. My oldest only had one which is from her cage mate before as she was the only one when we adopted her. So I believe it is just another way for them to say that they are in the same group and is like a mark for others to know what group they belong to. Guinea Pigs never bit the ear again after they have marked it. It is truly a strange thing, and just one aspect of their behavior that still remains to be explained truly.

It is nothing to worry about, it is only a need to worry about if you notice any new ones on their ears. If not then they are fine.

I hope this helps,
 Take care now,
    Julse
