Question
i have a 5 year old guinea pig who up until recently has been healthy, but i noticed the other day that he is not using one of his back legs when i tired to take a closer look he squealed like mad and tired to get away from me, since then he has been in his hideout and has not eaten or drank anything. we have tired to make him eat but he just wont have any of it and i am worried that he is in too much pain and may die. please help as i love my pet very much.

Answer
Have you any idea what caused the injury? It's very unusual for a guinea pig to break a leg.  The most common cause of injuries to the back legs happen because someone tried to grab the pig as he was running away and grabbed just the back leg or foot, hyperextending it backwards.

I saw an animal like that, it was a pig I had given this 9 year old boy and that's exactly how it happened. However it was not the leg that was broken, it was the hip. By pulling on the lower part of the leg the child had dislocated the hip. It never healed properly and the pig was crippled for its remaining days.

Take the hideout away so you can reach inside and lift him.  Be cautious, make sure you lift from the underside by supporting his belly. You may or may not see that the leg and/or hip is out of place. Whether it is or not you need a vet.  This is extremely painful for the poor thing and is not something that should be dealt with on your own.

Cavies have very fragile bones and they can break easily if handled roughly or if grabbed as I described. It sounds like this poor little guy is hurting very bad.  Take him to a vet.
