Guinea Pig not eating

Question
Hello! I have a 2 year old female guinea pig, and she recently had a urinary tract infection. I took her to the vet and the vet prescribed her Novotrmel, and I gave it to her for a week. The vet said she looked healthy in every other way. The last time she urinated on the floor it was clear of blood. However, now she is not eating. She sometimes does this when the weather gets warm, she stops eating for a couple days but usually gets her appetite back. Usually during these periods when she is not eating, she still chews her food and just spits it out (maybe trying to get the nutrients) but this time she is not doing that. I am starting to get worried now because she is gradually refusing to eat her favourite treats like cucumber and apples and hay. I am very worried that the UTI did something to her, I do not want to lose my piggy yet she is only 2. If you have any suggestions please let me know, I really appreciate it!

Answer
Hi Jessica,

You need to take her to a specialist small animal or exotic pet vet. A guinea pig who's not eating is not a happy piggy, and she is almost certainly unwell in some way. Perhaps there is a lingering infection after the UTI, she could have overgrown teeth or mouth sores, or she could have a digestive blockage. Whatever it is, a good vet will be able to drip-feed her to keep her strength up, and advise you as to the best course of action for whatever illness she has.

Good luck!

Jenny.
