Question
I currently bought three guinea pigs from a pet shop. One of them, a boar, is brown in colour but has red eyes. Does this indicate any sickness and if it is not can you please tell me why the eyes are red since he is not an albino.Thank you.

Answer
Hi!

There is no true albino in guinea pig genetics.  Many color varieties have red eyes.  It is not an illness, just their genetic make-up.

A black guinea pig should have dark eyes, a chocolate colored guinea pig usually has dark eyes with a red cast due to the removal of some of the black pigmentation.  A guinea pig that is the color of a light colored chocolate lab - sort of rusty orange color, can have either red or dark eyes.  A white guinea pig can have either dark eyes or red eyes too!  It can be kind of fun to learn about the genetics of guinea pigs!

Good luck with your new piggies!
