one of our pair of guinea pigs has died

Question
Hi

We had two female guineas (half-sisters) both four and a half. One died suddenly yesterday. Her sister seems fine is is still livley eating well etc. We have read that guinea pigs are social animals so should not live alone. So we are wondering if we need to get a companion for her. However she has always been a very dominant aggressive guinea pig so it might not be fair on a new comer. Also as she is already getting on in years, any new guinea might soon be left alone too.
We'd really appreciate some advice.
Many thanks

Answer
Hello Zena! Love that name!
This is true that giunea pigs are herd animals and she is now at risk for deppression. When I decided to get my giunea pig a companion and was in a situation that was EXACTLY like yours, I personnally decided that I was ready for another piggy but I took into consideration that facts and dsided that for me, my best bet was to get two more. I did get two more, and just as the three were warming up to one another, the original piggy died. I now still have my 2 girls (and more) and I am quite happy.
Altimatly it is your choice. I do not suggest getting just one more though, If you are willing to get a few more than you must promise to love them, even when the third dies and think about things like cost, cage size and people time.
If you decide agianst it, be on watch for deppression and anorexia in you current piggy.
If you need any more help, just ask.
