Skin Problem or birthmark?

Recently i've noticed a patch on my hamsters back which from afar looks like a darker patch of hair. But when i look through the fur it looks as if it is more of the skin being discolored. Im not sure if when i first received my hamster it was there. But for as long as i can remember it was. Im very scared it might be cancerous. Or if it could just be a mole or birthmark. Do you have any ideas what it could very well be? It would big  HUGE help if you responded.

Hi Julie,

    This sounds like the hamsters scent glands. These are dark spots on the hamsters back near their hind quarters.
    If this discolored skin is higher or lower on the back and does not feel like a lump, then it is more than likely a birthmark.
