Question
Hi, I noticed yesterday my gerbil was eating his poop.  Is he lacking a vitamin?  I give him mixed food with seeds, dried fruits, and corn and the occasional treats like apple crisps and dried blueberries.  Should I be giving more fresh fruits and vegtables and if so can you give me a list of the safe ones and how often?  Also he has been scratching his nails on the bottom of his cage recently, is this normal?  His nails are getting a little long, do they sell scratch blocks or something to file them or trim them?  Thank You

Answer
Hello Amy,
from what I know some animals do eat their own poop as it is normal for them to do. However, if you think he may be missing a vitamin than you can buy some vitamin drops like Oasis vitamin drops. I can think of a few things that are good for guinea pigs. Corn, string beans, peas, apples, banana, kiwi, carrots are what I can think of off the top of my head and I would give no more than a tablespoon a day. As far as nails growing you should clip the nails with a regular nail clipper, that's what I do and some gerbils will start acting a little weird just as digging to the very bottom of the cage and then keep going. :)
