Question
Hi Michael,
Three weeks ago we got what we thought was a male hamster from Petco. On Thanksgiving, she had a litter of babies. We read to feed her boiled egg and carrots, not to touch the babies until they are two weeks old and to separate them by three weeks. What else should we know? Thanks so much!!

Sandy

Answer
all you have to do is basically leave her alone. do not change her cage for about 2 weeks and do not add or remove things. Give her high protein food such as a little bit of high quality kitten food or maybe a few peanuts just be careful not to give her alot. Other then that her diet should be kept normal. of course make sure she ALWAYS has access to fresh water.

When the babies are about 3 and a half weeks old sex them and separate them by gender. The easiest way to tell a baby rodents gender in almost all rodents is by looking at the genitals the females genitals will be close to her anus the males will be farther apart.

Remember dwarf hamsters are social you should keep a female
baby as a companion for her.

She may cannibalize 1 or more of her babies this is sometimes unavoidable especially in larger litters and is natural
