Question
my hamster ate her babies What should I do?

Answer
Dear Brittany,
thank you for your question.
It sometimes happens that hamsters or other rodents eat their babies. This can have three reasons:
1. the mother is unexperienced and/or just too young to raise babies
2. stress, for example constant noise, people disturbing her, even cage cleaning can be a reason
3. lack of animal protein. Hamster are not vegetarians but need protein in their diet in form of e.g. mealworms. This is especially true for pregnant or nursing hamsters
A combination of all or two of the reasons is also possible.
If you want to try to breed again, I recommend waiting for two or three months so that she has time enough to recover. Being pregnant is exhausting for her in any case.
If you bought her pregnant in a pet shop, I strongly recommend not to breed her again. There are already too many hamsters out there without a home and it can be very hard to find good homes for up to 10 hamster babies.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
