Question
Hi,
I have a dwarf hamster and I am probably going to visit my cousins soon. I really want to bring my hamster but we probably be going by plane. The airline says they have to have some kind of certificate of health. But i don't know how to do that. Does it apply to hamsters? or will they keep her for quarantine to check for rabies? I sure hope not. Do you know anything about that? And if she can come, what do I have to provide her? I already have a travel case with a food bowl and water bottle. She is getting used to it now, I put her in it every weekend for a few minutes. Will she die if she goes on the plane with me? She's been on car rides before and was fine. Please help. Thanks, Mariam

Answer
Hamsters can travel by plane and should be fine. Just make sure you provide your hamster with enough food and water to make the trip.

As for your other question about the certificate of health, check with the airline and ask them what they are looking for on this certificate of health.  Maybe they misunderstood the type of animal that you would be bringing with you.  I've never heard of one being needed for hamsters--usually larger animals such as cats and dogs.

Also check with the airline to find out whether they will let you carry your hamster with you or whether they require the hamster to ride with the luggage.

Have fun on your trip,
Lorelei
