Hello,

I have had a my gerbil peaches for almost a year along with three other ones peaches is different though I'm not sure what breed she is but my other three have red eyes and she doesn't.  She is just now getting over a respiratory infection and I changed the bedding about a week ago to corn cob I noticed she was fine then I saw she was loosing a bit of hair by her left ear and she's itching allot and she keeps getting those red tears on her right eye she looks terrible.  Now it's even worse she's scratched her ear so much it's bleeding could it be the bedding again?  can you please help  TY

sounds like your gerbil has mites and she should go to a vet asap. I would bring all your gerbils to the vet to make sure none of them are ill as well. Since she is having so many problems you might want to consider seperating her from everyone else, so they won't get what she has and she won't get something from them.

Answer
Mites can travel from animal to animal. The mites I think your gerbil may have are mange mites and those live under the skin and cause pain and hair loss because the gerbils are constantly sratching and they will scratch until their bleeding. The mange mites prefer animals with fur and yes the other gerbils in the different cage could get them. If you can't afford to take them all to the vet then I would just take that one and isolate her in a different room until she is cured. There really isn't anything in a pet store that can get rid of the mange mite though.
