Question
Hi Karen,
I've got my lovely hamster HAMY, he is about 9 weeks old, I got him 4 weeks ago and he was very active with a very good appetite til 6 days ago when I noticed that he drinks more than often.3 days ago I noticed that he has diarrhea he was not eating and drinking and sleeping all the times in pain. I assumed it is a wet tail and I took him to Vet immediately. he gave Bene-Bac to restore his good bacteria in his intestine and Antibiotic.he was not drinking and eating at all so the vet inject some liquids under his skin so he wouldn't dehydrate. yesterday and today I gave it to him 2wice daily. today I noticed blood in his watery waste. Then I saw a piece of cotton in his waste and I found out it was from gnawing my bed sheet which he always did but I never knew he ATE it! :( he still sleeps all the time and don't eat, just occasionally drinks very little. the wet also gave him some dry herbs and told me to mix it with 3drops water and feed him daily since he doesn't eat anything:( I think its not a wet tail , the diarrhea is because of the cotton he ate, should I continue with the antibiotic and... what else can I do for him? will he survive? plz let me know .its been 3 days he has diarrhea and he doesn't eat anything and he sleeps all the times:( :( I love him so badly and I dont want him to go:( :( :(

Answer
Hi Manya,

Try giving him water by hand with an eye dropper. It is very important to keep him hydrated. Do not give him any fresh fruits or vegetables, as these can cause diarrhea.
He does not seem to be getting an better, even with the antibiotics. I would suggest taking him back to the vets as soon as possible.
I am thinking that it may not be wet tail either. If it were, I would think the antibiotics would be helping (I am not a vet, this is just my opinion).
There are a couple other things it may be and would not hurt to ask the vet about, One is called Intussusseption, this is a condition generally following a severe case of diarrhea. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, obvious abdominal cramping and sometimes prolepses of the colon and rectum.
The other one is called Tyzzer's Disease. This usually affects newly weaned pups and hamsters under stress. Symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, extreme diarrhea, dehydration and weight loss.
I can't really say if Hamy will survive or not, But I will be hoping for the best.
If you have anymore questions, please write again, and if you wouldn't mind, an update on how he is doing would be great.

Thank you for writing, I am hoping for the best.
