Question
hi, i asked you for advice last wk on my 19month old syrian hamster who was making squeaking noises and when i took her to the vets he said it could be an hormone disorder. he treated her for mites just incase and ive been disinfecting her cage and changing it often. the problem is she is still making these noises but i think she is wheezing and not squeaking, she is back at the vets this afternoon and i was wondering if she could have a lung infection like pneumonia, she is still eating and drinking but i noticed yesterday that its seems she is getting out of breath easy and she is not as lively as she usually is. should i ask the vet if it could be this. thanks nicky

Answer
There is a possibility that it could be pneumonia, or it could be an upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately, URI's are very common in hamsters. Symptoms include: wheezing, shortness of breath, weakness, lethargic, and lack of appetite. I would definitely mention her symptoms to the vet and mention an upper respiratory infection or pneumonia, as that could be the problem. It could also be allergies, which he should also consider checking her for as well.

Hope this helps!
