Wet-tail

Question
I just got a syrian hamster about a week and a half ago. It is probably about a month old. I just noticed today that the fur around her rear-end was very wet. She doesn't seem to smell, but she has been lazy since I got her. She seems to eat and drink just fine. I guess the thing that is throwing me off is that there really isn't any poop but mostly just water. I just noticed this, so it could be nothing but all but the articles talking about the hamster dying within 24 hours has gotten me a little worried. She's avoided exercise totally since i've gotten her(she won't even touch the wheel), and seems to sleep alot. I've done my best making her comfortable, and giving her privacy, and would be upset to see her go. any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Sorry for the delay in response, I've been having some internet difficulties.

Wet-tail usually does produce a very strong smell that is unmistakable.  However she may have diarrhea that is not caused by the wet tail bacteria.  This can be just as dangerous as they will dehydrate to death.  She needs to see a vet to determine the cause of this and to get antibiotics if need be.  Until then she needs to be kept hydrated, you can use pedialyte mixed 50/50 with water in a 2nd water bottle or in an oral syringe to get water into her.  Stop with all veggies and treats and feed her only her mix, plain water and the pedialyte/water mix.  The vet will be able to advise you more on what to do with feeding and water.
