Question
Hello. I am preparing to buy a new ferret in a couple of weeks. I've done a lot of research about ferrets and other animals, but I'm still not sure. We have a 4-year-old chihuahua. She's not that energetic and she's kind of lazy. I've had rabbits before and she just sniffed them but I am very aware that a ferret and rabbit are different. I'm scared that with the ferret's endless energy and wanting to play that she might interact back. From your experience, do you think they'll get along? (I will make sure and supervise no matter what, just to make sure.)

Answer
Hi Jamie, good thing you're intent on supervising, because that is required.  :)

I've seen ferrets get along with just about anything, even my hamsters. I even had a terrier once who got along with them, although she was a puppy, and terriers are usually a big no-no.  I have no idea whether your chihuahua would get along with a ferret; the only way to find out is to introduce her to the ferret you're interested in under careful supervision and see what happens. Generally dogs and ferrets are OK but really every case is different and the only way to tell is to put them in a room together and find out. It's like ferrets and baths.....there is absolutely no way to tell if a ferret will be easy to bathe until you plunk him or her in the water. Some of them start swimming, some of them start screaming, and some of them have no clue what to do. There's only one way to find out.  :)

Good luck,
DG
