QuestionI got zoe from a friend who had her for a week..she got her at a petstore a couple hours from here..and panda I bought when she was 3 months and they are both female and both have tattoos. I thought it was so strange that she got so big because when I got her I couldn't believe she was 3 months old! she was so little she fit in my hand and she cried like a baby when I would leave her alone in the room. Now she is huge and very hyper. She is very playful and seems happy. could it be something else wrong? or am I just being silly? I didn't think she was 3 months when I got her..but I send it for the birth-certificate and I had to send in the color of her, and a number. it said she was female and born in january. thanks for your help.

Question -
I have two female ferrets, zoe who is 11 months and panda who is 8 months. I was wondering are there different types of ferrets, besides the coloring? They look so different. The oldest zoe weighs 1 pound and is 17 inches with tail, and 12 without. and the youngest, panda weighs 3 pounds and is 23 long with tail, and 16 without. why is she so much bigger? her body and head are shaped so different. I have heard the males get bigger, but she is female.
Answer -
Well, there could be a few reasons for size variations. Where did you get each of them? If there is a blue/black dot (tattoo) in their ear then that ferret is from Marshall. Marshall (large ferret breeder)ferrets tend to go with the norm of larger males between 2-3 pounds if neutered and larger if whole. Females weigh from .75 to 2.5 pounds. Zoe at 11 months is almost full grown and quite average in weight and lentgh for a female. My largest female weighs a little over 2 pounds and my smalest never quite reached a pound. Panda seems a bit large for a female - weight and length seem more in line for a male. Odd question - are you sure she is a she? Both "her" weight at 3 pounds and length at 16 inches seem large for a female, especially since she isn't totally full grown yet. If they are both Marshall ferrets and both female then it maybe worth taking Panda for a vet check up to make sure nothing is wrong. If Panda isn't a Marshall (no tattoo) then it could be she is just a really large female. Usually breeder ferrets are a bit larger. Certainly make sure Panda is female and healthy. If both are good, then she will just be a big girl!

AnswerWell, I'll be. I am sure it is just an unusual size then. Next time you go to the vet for Rabies and Distemper shots (at a year I am guessing) have a ferret vet check her over just to be sure. If it was just her weight then I would worry more, but since she is so long - they match and just seem large. Again, I am sure she is fine. Size variations can always happen in ferrets!
