Question
My aunt has gotten a female ferret and we need to know what to and what not to feed a ferret. Also we were wondering what type of shots you should get. How do you go about breeding a ferret and what do you do during its gestation period. It would help me a lot thanks.

Answer
Thank you for your question.. I personally recommend a holistic food, like Nutro Natural or Blue Holistic for cats. These are both good foods, but I don't know if they are available everywhere.
The main thing is the holistic seems to be no corn, very little starches and preservatives, and a much better quality food that they like the taste. I would find a holistic cat food with a POULTRY base, like chicken. Avoid fish meal and any type of corn, or corn meal.

As far as breeding your female, breeding ferret is  something I would NOT recommend, unless you have years experience with ferrets. Most likely your female is already spayed if she came from a pet store, and that is a good thing. A female ferret that is not spayed can easily die if not bred.
And a male ferret that is NOT neutered (one you can use to breed with) is a lot of times NOT a good pet. They have a strong odor, and are aggressive. And they are NOT descented.
Breeding ferrets is often a heart breaking and difficult task. I would never suggest anyone enter into it unless you are an experienced breeder. Ferret litters very often have several kits die, and sometimes they lose the whole litter. Some female ferrets do not make good mothers, and hand rearing kits that are under two weeks old is very difficult.  It is not unusual for the mother to abandon/kill the kits, or worse become aggressive towards anyone trying to handle them. It can turn into a heartbreaking experience, not to mention not for the faint of heart. Here is a good website with lots of info:

I would recommend   very good book called "Ferrets for Dummies" by Kim Shilling, that will help you with some of your questions.I would recommend   very good book called "Ferrets for Dummies" by Kim Shilling, that will help you with some of your questions.
