Question
I have a 3 year old jill who has recently started to pass small green/brown semisolid stools containing a lot of mucus. I cant feel any unusual lumps or bumps along her belly, and it doesn't seem sore to the touch. She has lost weight and shivers when she is going to sleep. Also she is slightly more subdued than usual but is still active, inquisitive, eating and drinking. It has persisted over the last few days and she has become a little dehydrated so i'm taking her to the vet today. We'll get her rehydrated and cozy but are unsure of what should be the next step. The reason I ask is that i'm having trouble finding a vet that knows anything about ferrets in the area. It sounds to me like it could be some form or gut infection, but what?

Answer
It sounds like your jill has ECE (the greens).  It's very common in ferrets.  It causes their stools to be seedy looking, green and slimy.  Chicken baby food, Pepto Bismal and Pedialyte are good to give.  They hate Pepto but it will coat her stomach and help her to get better.  Pepto does make their stool dark though so don't let that scare you.  ECE will usually go away or go dormant, but you really do need to keep them hydrated as I'm sure you know dehydration can kill a ferret very quickly.
