Question
Hi, I adopted a 10 month old male fuzzie from a good house, he's got no problems or bad habits or anything. I was wondering if I should get another fert and if I do what kind (e.g., male or  female, old or young etc.). I've only got one cage at the moment, and it's too small for two or more carpet sharks. I am new to these fuzzballs, but I know enough about them to care for them and maybe 7% more. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hello, and thanks for your question! Well, IF you should get a friend for him is completely up to you and what you want from your pets. If you want him to be solely bonded to you, and you have lots of time to play with him and spend time with him, he should be fine as a single ferret. However, I've personally found much joy and satisfaction in having more than one ferret...there are many pros, like he will have a constant companion, won't be easily bored or lonely, plus it frees your time up more since he wouldn't rely just on you to fulfill his social needs. Don't get me wrong, having two or more ferrets still requires play time and attention to them from you, but they will have their special little friend in each other. I think ferrets are normally extremely social creatures, and may be happier and healthier with other carpet sharks. But it is totally up to you. Also it's not written in stone if you don't want a friend for him now but later decide it may be best...my Big Ferret I've had alone for a good year and half before I figured out he was a little lonely and I got him his "girlfriend". They are now very close and love to groom each other and play.

And as for what gender to get, that also is completely up to you...ferrets don't really care, as long as it's a ferret! It's always a good idea to take him with you if you choose to get him a buddy, and see who he "clicks" with the best. It's extremely rare for ferrets not to get along, but the more they like each other right off the bat the better. As far as age goes, it may be better to get him a fellow "baby" or very young adult; he will need a friend who can keep up with him during play! Adults tend to wind down a little as they get older.

Ok, that's all the advice I have for you now, hope I've helped you figure out what would be best for you and your new fuzzie! Best of luck
