Question

rascal
hey, i have just bought my first ever ferret, a 10-12 week old (polecat) from a ferret breeder at a cattle market, he seems very playful with his toys, however he will not stop charging for my hands, i'm currently having to take him out of the cage with gloves! sometimes wen he goes for me ill grab him by the scruff until he yawns.. but sometime he will just hiss at me and bite on my gloves harder. it might just be early days and hasn't got used to me, but id rather try getting him to stop sooner rather than later so friends and family can handle him without getting bitten. please help. thankyou, Josh.

Answer
Since he is quite young and much like a puppy, ferrets will bite anything they can.  He may also be teething.  My baby ferrets usually "attack" anything that moves or smells good until they are about 6 months old.  Be prepared for it and be gentle with him.  I don't punish the ferret for biting but will make sure I know why it is happening.  If he is biting because he is young and full of energy, don't pick him up until some of that energy is used up.  If he is biting because he is scared, allow him time to adjust.  If he is biting because you are holding him just after he comes of the cage to play, wait to hold him.
