Ferret has a bald spot

21 10:49:43

Question
My fiance's ferret is about four years old, has had her glands removed and is also fixed.  She eats only Premium Ferret pellets, since she won't eat any other brand, and the occasional chip of chocolate.  Beside the time when she drank the water leaking out around the toilet her poop has been solid and brown.  She lives in the apartment with my fiance, my roommate, myself, and four cats whom she beats on.
Before she came up two, almost three months ago she had refused to eat, and as such had significantly less hair.  Recently she began to gain her hair and coloring back, but a spot on her hindquarters near the base of her tail has yet to grow back.  In fact, it seems to have gotten even more bald.  I've looked at a few possible causes, but they all have something to do with bad glands.  I was just wondering if it's her getting old, or if it's something I should be worrying about.
Thank you for your time.  :3

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Please do not think me rude, but, when you say glands, do you mean scent gland or adrenal gland? Before Marshall ferrets are shipped out, they are fixed and descented, which means their scent glands are removed, but not their adrenal glands.  Maybe while reading, you got the two confused? Does your ferret have two blue dots tattooed on her ear? That means she is a Marshall ferret and has been spayed and descented. Anyway, for the purpose of this answer, I am going to assume you meant scent gland, but let me know if you mean adrenal, because then this answer will be useless! Again, I don't mean to be rude or insulting in any way! Please don't get the wrong impression.

Unfortunately, given that your little girl is four years old (entering the "geriatric ferret" world), and that you're seeing a spot of missing fur on the tail, that makes me point to adrenal gland disease. Here is a link to a very informative article about adrenal disease in ferrets:

http://www.ferret-universe.com/health/adrenal.asp#flow

Basically, as you will read, the adrenal glands start to overwork producing sex hormones and this causes all kinds of problems. Often the most commonly noticed symptom of adrenal disease in ferrets is hair loss starting at the base of the tail and eventually working its way up the body. It also presents, in females, with a swollen vulva (and if you ever get a boy ferret, adrenal disease presents with a swollen prostate, which means that he would have trouble urinating and he will probably be much more aggressive than usual). Have you noticed anything like that? Also, again, for future reference, in both males and females, hair loss, generally starting at the boss of the tail (but the hair loss can start anywhere on the body)  is a common sign of adrenal disease.

Unless you are positively sure that her adrenal glands have been operated on and the problem is removed, I would take her to the vet. She is at the age where this could happen to her. She should see a vet right away to have some blood work done, at the very least, and to have the vet check over her behavior and other tests, to confirm adrenal disease or to figure out the true problem behind the hair loss.

Please let me know how everything turns out! Good luck and if you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know!

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
