Litterbox

Question
We have three ferrets. They are all very healthy.  Two of them are one year old and the other is 7 months. The youngest of them all likes to push away the litterbox and go to the bathroom behind or next to it. I have tried the put a C-clamp to prevent her from doing that but it doesn't do the job because of the way our cage is built. Could you please give me some suggestions on what I could do about it. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Madeline,

Yes, ferrets do like to rearrange their cages a bit. This happens to everyone, so don't feel alone! Instead of C-clamps, you could try zip ties or bungee cords, or maybe even velcro strips if that would work better in your cage set up. Or you could think about adding another litter box in a different place. Sometimes they need to be retrained to use their litter box. You should pick her up and put her in her litter box whenever she wakes up from a really long nap and don't let her out to play until she goes.  You could start giving her a piece of hand fed kibble as a treat every time she goes in the right place as well. This is going to be a long process, re-training her, but it might really help with her potty problems. Also, you could always put a paper towel under the litter box to catch any accidents, just in case she figures out how to move the litter box again.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
