Fixed or unfixed??

Question
QUESTION: I got a male 1 year old ferret a month ago.  Yesterday I got a female ferret so he would have a playmate.  Bought both off of craigslist and was told they were fixed.  The female is right under 1 year old.  They played good together outside the cage.  As soon as I put the female in the males cage I think he was attempting to mate with her.  She is now in a seperate cage but I am wanting to know how do I know if they are fixed or not.  I am wanting to have 2 ferrets for friendship in 1 cage.  Should I do without the female and get another male???

ANSWER: Hello Susan,

If you look at her ear, and you see two blue dots on it, then that means she was fixed and descented, if she's a marshall ferret. If you can't find any blue dots, then you might want to get in touch with the person you bought her from and ask where she got her so you can track down some veterinary records. When female ferrets go into heat, they need to be mated out of it or fixed, or they will die. This should be a problem that has already been addressed as she is a year old. In any case, you need to find some sort of proof that she was spayed because if she hasn't been, and she goes into heat, like I said, she will die if she isn't fixed or mated.

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews

QUESTION: the person I got her from swears she was fixed.  I am hearing that they rough house or male showing alpha male tendonsies can look like trying to mate??  If I take her to a vet would they be able to tell if she has been fixed?  She is not marshalls I looked for dots right away

Answer
Hello again Susan,

I'm so sorry it took me so long to get this. My email hasn't been filtering right, so all of my emails from AllExperts have ended up in my junk folder. Rough housing and alpha behavior can look like mating if you aren't sure what that looks like. If you took her to a vet, they should be able to tell you for sure if she's fixed or not.

Again, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
