Question
My Female ferret has been on heat for around 3 days now and my male has started trying to mate her already. is this too early for the female? and the female keeps trying to get away but he keeps chasing her down and the screaming worries me..

Answer
Are they being housed together currently? If so I suggest separating immediately because the hob will not stop pestering your jill at all she will see no peace.

Before breeding them I suggest thinking very VERY hard about it do you have homes lined up for all of the kits? Are your hob and jill in excellent health? Have they ever had any health issues at all? Are they related? If you can't find homes for the kits are your prepared to care for them for their entire lives? Are you prepared to take her to the vet regularly during the pregnancy and if something goes wrong when she tries to give birth?

If the answer to any of those questions is no then I do not suggest mating them but getting the female a jill jab instead then having them both speutered.

If there is no changing your mind on breeding I would find a local breeder and ask to be mentored on breeding and rearing.

Everyone loves baby ferrets but things can go wrong quickly if everything isn't done perfectly

And do not put her with him currently it should be at least 14 days after her vulva pops out.
