Baby ferret eating their bedding...help?

Question

Gizmo
First, an introduction, we just recently got another addition to our ferret family, We have one sable and one half albino/silver fur, and decided it was time to get another...He's a tiny little baby, at least 3 months I'm sure...he's got the sable body outline with spots on his neck and paws/face. Anyway, to the question...

Our little baby Gizmo likes to eat, A LOT.  When his dish runs out he resorts to eating the paper bedding in his cage, I can usually catch him before he does it, though. I think since we got him from Petco, in a cage with 6 others he might have been pushed around here and there and wasn't let to get any food, because he was quite bloated when we got him, I assume there might be some blockage. We use the CareFresh white super absorbent fluff for our cages, we've never had a problem with our other 2 ferrets eating the fluff, and they're just fine, passing stool normally, no ribbon-like poo. Our little guy has a normal bowel movement rate of about 3-4 hours.  I just want to know if there are any solutions not involving FerretLax, because of the warning on the back that says "Do not administer to ferrets 6 months or under.", or if the fluff will pass normally...

And what is best to feed him?...we used 8-in-1 canned on a normal basis because he has a problem chewing on his hard food unless its mashed into mush with water, which we've also started doing.

Oh, and our ferret doesn't chitter like our others...he makes a loud yelping sound, I was wondering if there's any indication as to why that is?  I've never heard this kind of noise from a ferret before.

Answer
First, I would suggest using actual bedding like old t-shirts etc instead of Carefresh.  It is easier to clean because you only have to wash it and they tend not to eat or otherwise ingest it.  He should always have access to his food too, at 3 months he should be able to eat it just fine.  Baby ferrets can eat mice or chicken before their eyes even open, so I would make sure he has food available at all times.I am not sure what you could try, but a call to your vet is a good idea to make sure he isn't blocked.  My usual food to recommend is Natural Gold or Totally Ferrets Venison formula.
A loud yelp usually indicates fear or stress, but it could be that he is getting used to the new situation and he learned to make that noise to keep the others away while at the store.
