How to Introduce a new ferret to group?

21 10:39:06

Question
I wonder could you please let me have some ideas on how to introduce a new ferret into my group of 5, I know it is a very hard thing to do as I have had to do it with the last 3 of them but the one I have at present a small gill polecat but they will just not let her in their pack, and now with there being 5 of them Im finding it near impossible so she is in a cage by herself while they have a shed 10ft by 10ft to themselves, unfair.

I'd appreciate any help regarding this matter.

Thanking you

Answer
Hi Maureen:

That's a rough question!  The first thing that comes to mind for me if to bathe all of them so they all smell alike, then immediately after their baths, immediately reintroduce her to the group.  With ferrets, its all about smell and they can tell that she smells different than they do, so she's the outsider.

I assume from your letter ypu live in the UK?  Here in the US we keep ferrets indoors w
Here we can have ablot more interraction with them plus ferreta can't tolerate temperatures over a max of 80-degrees.  I hope you are in cool weather and have good air circulation in their shed, alonf with some safe toys to play with (tunnels, little balls with bells inside, and my favorite are baby toya as long as they don't have any rubber on them.  Hard plastiv Playschool  or similar toys that are battery operated and talk, light up, or make funny noises when touched are the absolute best if you remember to change batteries regularly :-).

Hope that solves your problem.  If not, it may be a good choice to re-home her where she will fit in better.  Sad, but sometimes necessary for well being.

Best of luck!
