Question

Benny!
Hi!
My ferret Benito (we just call him Benny) just turned 1 year old a few days ago. I got him from a pet store back in August.
He was litter trained and active and had his nose in everything.
He still is active and happy but he hasn't used his litter box since we got him. I tried all different techniques but he will always find some place other than his litter box to poop in. Even if that means his bed. i tried all different kinds of litter. From the pellets he had in the store to shredded paper to sand to cat litter! Nothing works! Should I get a litter box thats big enough for him to stand in? Also he seems to want to sleep in it.
I tried putting one of his poops in his box to set an example but that didnt help.
Any advice?
Also my ferret's hair seems to be really thin. you cant tell when he's dry but when water separated his furr he looks like he has big bald spots everywhere. Should I change his shampoo? Right now im using Ferret Sheen by 8in1.
Also are there any shampoo's that work better at eliminating Benny's "scent"
He's up to date on all vaccines. Neutered. Glands are removed.
Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
I'll start with the easy question.  In general (unless they are gross) I don't bath ferrets and I don't think it is a good idea.  Frequent baths will dry out their skin and cause an increase in odor.  To keep odor down, clean cage bedding frequently, feed a high quality ferret food, and clean up poop daily.
I imagine most ferrets, when in a tiny space like at a pet store, will use a litter box since there isn't a lot of places to go.  Once we increase their space, they "forget" what to do.  I would use a paper-based litter and a box for every level of the cage.  Make sure he has fabric bedding to sleep in (old t-shirts etc) or hammocks.  If he consistently sleeps in one of the litter boxes, remove the litter and put some bedding in it, and hope he uses the other boxes.  Some ferrets just don't get it and the best we can do is to find the spot he tends to go and place a litter box there.
