Question

Reno's Bruise
Recently we were playing with our male ferret, Reno, and we
noticed a small, nearly dime-sized bruise perpendicular to
his anus.  It is a very dark purple. This bruise was
DEFINITELY NOT caused by TRAUMA.  I know ferrets are clumsy
& we can't always watch them, but it's really obvious when
Reno gets hurt as he squeaks & squeals!

This may be completely unrelated but he also "wet the bed"
today when he was asleep.  I'm chalking this up to the fact
that Reno has ALWAYS been extremely lazy & he probably just
didn't want to get down off of our bed & use the litter
box.  But since the bruise is so close to his "nether-
parts" I was wondering if there was any connection.

We can't afford a veterinarian but if we have to we will
get that money together as fast as possible.  I can't lose
my baby boy :(  Bailey is his sister & they're only a
couple of months apart & they are 110% attached at the hip.
I really think Bailey would die of loneliness if her
"bubby" had to leave us.  I don't know what to do!

Thank you so much for helping!  ALSO, I included a picture
& this is the best I could get with a squirmy ferret & a
bruise obscured by a ton of white fur.  I hope it helps!

Answer
Hello Ali,

Sorry for the delayed reply.  I have been doing some research to try and place what this may be.  I've looked in several texts and online, but this case seems pretty unique.  I could not find any information that might point to a cause.

Thank you for the picture.  It is much easier than trying to imagine what it may look like.  The first thing I thought was "Wow, that is an interesting bruise."  It is precisely located and perfectly shaped.  This makes me doubt it is due to trauma.

There is not much in that region.  It is below the anus and probably not related to the urinary tract since that is further up near his stomach.  If he continues to have "accidents" and the bruise is still present there may be a correlation.

One cause that I can think of is crypt orchidism since this is the region of the scrotum.  This is a genetic condition where only one testicle descends.  When he was neutered, there is a possibility that only one testicle was removed and the other is still present in his abdomen.  I am not sure if this would cause a bruise, but due to the proximity it might be something to consider.

If the bruise has not cleared up or he continues to have accidents, I would take him to your vet for an exam.  They might find a cause, and it is always better to diagnose problems early.  I wish I could be of more help, but this is a situation that will need veterinary attention if the bruise has not resolved by now.
