Ill old ferret

Question
I have an 11 year old ferret named Bert who has fallen quite ill. He's never been sick before. My boys are spoiled so they get good dry food, baby food, ferret treats. (all have been the same for years) He hasn't pooped in days but the last one was normal. He lives in a normal 3 story ferret cage surrounded by a 6'x4' enclosure. I know that he has lived his life and that his body is giving up. he's not eating or drinking anything. He won't be coming back from this. We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow to send him to his final resting place. All i really want to know is if i can give him anything OTC to make his last night with me comfortable? He's been my best friend for a long time and I don't want his last night on earth to be a painful one. Thank you, Mandi

Answer
Hello Mandi,

I think I may be responding to this a little late as you sent it last night. I sincerely apologize for not getting the email sooner and I am truly sorry for your loss. It is not an easy thing to lose your pet. Try to think about the wonderful times you had with him over the past eleven years and always remember that he is in a better place now, without pain.

For future reference, if you decide one day to get a new ferret friend, not many OTC pain relievers are okay for ferrets. Children's Benadryl is safe in small doses, and Baby Aspirin is safe *as long as you have vet supervision in the dosage amounts*. NEVER use Children's Tylenol on a ferret as even the smallest of doses can be fatal.

Again, I am extremely sorry for your loss and I hope if you need anything else, you'll feel free to ask.

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
