shedding and smell

Question
Hi, my ferret has been shedding for a while now. She has been shedding for over a month and I was just wondering if this was normal. The last time she shed, it lasted only about a week and a half. She isnt really going bald anywhere, but whenever I play with her, her fur still falls out. I was also wondering what I can do to get rid of the smell.

Answer
Shedding during season changes is perfectly normal, some ferrets shed very little, some shed quite a bit, it depends on how much fur they have and how warm it gets in your area. As long as you're not noticing any bald spots, and the fur is coming out uniformly, it shouldn't be a problem. You may want to invest in a brush that aids in fur shedding, that will quicken it up and prevent your ferret from getting hair balls. Also try giving her some ferret laxative to aid in hair ball prevention.

As for the smell, stop bathing your ferret if you have been giving her lots of baths. Instead change the litter and bedding regularly, and clean out the litter area at least every two days. I find that wall plug ins help a lot.
