Just got another ferret.

Question
A couple months ago i bought a pair of female ferrets, Sprite and Squirt, and they are both about a year old. They've lived with each other the majority of there lives and get along great. About a week ago i adopted another female ferret (Coke), about a year old as well, who appears to have been an only ferret her whole life. My boyfriend and i are trying to introduce them, but Sprite is very vicious towards Coke and when they start fighting and we try to pull them apart she refuses to let go. Squirt isn't so bad. I'm doing everything that i've read about; neutral ground, switching them up in their cages, you name it. Do you have any other suggestions or advice? I've also read that this could take awhile, so maybe that's just the case?

Thank you!
Madi

Answer
Hi Madi, Sprite, Squirt and Coke,

It sounds like you are doing a really amazing job as a ferret mommy! Great names, too, by the way.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things as far as introduction goes with the neutral ground, putting them with each other's scent, etc.  Just make sure to pull them apart and try again later if any of them are pooping, bleeding or screaming excessively, but it sounds like you are already doing that, too.

I'm very sorry, but the only advice I can give you is to keep up what you're already doing and be diligent about it. These things do take time, especially if one of the ferret's has been an only ferret their whole life. Sometimes a ferret that is used to being an only ferret will never take to other ferrets. Hopefully, that isn't the case with your kids. Just keep trying and be sure to watch very closely for signs of aggression.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
