Ferret food and smell

Question
In a previous answer, you stated that giving your ferrets cat food that is high in poultry reduced the smell and was good for them - what cat food brand do you use and suggest to be used for ferrets? I have four and they just became smelly adults.
Sincerest thanks,
Ryan

Answer
Hello Ryan,
I personally use Special Care cat food by Purina, and had good results with it. But the main thing you want to aviod is "Fish and fish meal" in the ingredients, as well as a high ASH content. Purina ONE Special Care Sensitive

I can ONLY speak from my personal experience. And I have had people tell me it's wrong, and I have had people tell me it's right on the money. But I have fed my ferrets The Purina Special Care, and have virtually NO heath problems from it. And my ferrets lived to 7-9 years old, healthy and happy. I also supplement with a few drops of Ferretone every week.
It REALLY is just the basics with feeding your ferrets, of avoiding the fish meal because it can make their odor very pungent, and avoiding the high ash content due to possible urinary problems. After that, it is a matter of personal preference. My vet was the one who recommended the Special Care. So your vet can really be helpful too. Thanks, and I hope this helps.
