Three Ferrets?

Question
I have two ferrets, Milo and Lola and am thinking of adding a third. I have had
milo for a year and a half and Lola for about 9 months and read an article that
said that three is company in case anyone dies.. I know thats morbid but I don't
know if my two will feel left out if I buy a third. They do not have a cage and half
of my apartment is theirs so room is not an issue. Do you think buying a third
would be a good idea or would make my kids upset?

Answer
Hello, and thanks for your question! Well, I have 3 ferrets, and one of the main reasons I got the 3rd was because if one of the two died, the other would probably die as well from heartache. Ferrets get very attached to their friends, and I don't think it's morbid to plan ahead. (If one dies out of a trio, the two left will be sad, but I think having a friend to share in the grief would keep them more likely to want to survive and make it through the tragedy.)

And no, they do not generally get jealous, although adding the 3rd to a couple may take a little more time to break the ice since the first 2 already have a bond. But since yours are still pretty young it shouldn't be a problem.  And 3 is a good number to have, also in that if one's asleep or busy, the other two can play together. With ferrets, the more you add the merrier it is! They are extremely social and more often than not make immediate friendships with one another. It would be a good idea to bring both of your babies when you pick a 3rd, to make sure they all get along well. So everything should be fine as long as you devote the same amount of attention to each one and try to play with them as a group. But I'm sure you'll find that they'll have a blast keeping each other (and you!) entertained.

Hope I've helped, good luck!
