Ferrets Dont get worms?!?!?!

Question
Hi

I just read your aswer to a ?, stating that "Ferrets Don't Get Worms".

Well I have 2 ferrets and have had them for 6 years. I just got a puppy about 3weeks ago and beleived he had worms. His stomach was swolen 3sizes etc (showedall the signs of roundworms)

Well during this time I noticed manywhite or beige colored dots in his stool, that I assume to be "eggs". I then focused on my ferrets and saw the same. So I took in stool for the puppy and 1 ferret and they "say" they found Roundwrms in both stools! I'm Now set to take them ack and read your answer to that question?!?!?!?

I have read "some" online about Round worms in Ferrets and even found a D-Wormer called "Beaphar Ivermectin Spot On"

URL: http://www.ferretsrus.co.uk/ferretsabout/acatalog/Ivermectin_Spot_On.html

Who should I believe or should I get a 2nd opinion?

Thanks

Mike

Answer
You don't need a second opinion....I should have stated mine more clearly.  Ferrets *can* get worms, but they don't get them like puppies do. Puppies should be wormed routinely because worms are a common occurrence.  Unless ferrets have been exposed directly to another pet (or feces from another pet) who has worms, chances are they won't get worms.

Personally, I wouldn't try any home remedy to treat my ferret for worms - I would let my ferret vet recommend something effective and safe. Ivermectin is a strong medication; if you do decide to use it, be sure you follow the directions very carefully.

Best of luck to you. Please be sure to treat ALL PETS in your home at the same time.  You must be very frustrated right now.  So sorry this has happened.

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
