my ferrets scratching problems

Question
My ferret is about to be 1yr old.. He is the cutest thing in the world.. Until he starts scratching at my bedroom door nonstop. I have to keep him in my bedroom at home and I hate locking him up but I have no choice. He will scratch at my door for hours on end.. Its enough to drive me insane. I've tried the apple spray, barriers of all sorts, caging him but he just scratches at the cage.. I am out of ideas and losing countless hours of sleep at night.. Any suggestions? I'm desperate!

Answer
Hello Kathryn!

Unfortunately scratching is something instinctual in ferrets.  They were domesticated from burrowing animals and it still runs strong within them.  Some, however, express this trait more than others and can be quite persistent.

The best thing you can do is discourage the behavior.  Firmly pick him up by the scruff, say NO (or "hiss" like an angry ferret) and flick him  lightly on the nose (not too hard, because they are small and you don't want to hurt him).  You must be CONSISTENT in punishment.  If you catch him scratching make sure you do so.  Also, reward GOOD behavior (positive reinforcement is a great training method).  If you say "NO!" and he gives in and walks away, reward him with a treat.

For example, one of my little demon girls loves to scratch.  I can say "Salem, NO" in a threatening tone, and she will give in and walk away.  But of course, the moment I leave the room I know she is back at it again!

One thing you might want to consider is placing down linoleum flooring or tile.  It is a far less fun surface to scratch, and he cannot do any harm to the floor.

Another thing you can do is make a "dig box".  Obtain a VERY large storage bin that is at least 1.5-2 feet tall and place some digging material inside.  Rice works well, but it can be messy if they manage to throw some out.  I have found yesterday's news cat litter is great and my guys LOVE digging in the box.  The pellets are also heavy enough that they don't go flying all over the room.  Do not use any clay based cat litter or anything made of wood chips since these can be harmful.

I hope this information helps!!  I don't think I've ever met a ferret who didn't scratch.  It's just a fact of life for these guys.
