Urination

Question
My Boyfriend & I got a female baby ferret a few months ago. When we got her I believe she was 6 weeks old, she is now about a Month or Month and a half old. We have had no problems with her regarding litter box training. She goes right to her litter box when she has to poop, and she rarely poops outside of her cage when we let her play. I have been noticing though that she is peeing all over her cage. (outside the litter box) We had, had some soft shavings down in her cage and they kept getting wet, so we mixed the shavings up again thinking it was just her getting messy with her water bottle. Last night, we cleaned her shavings out and realized that her urine was up the whole side of her cage. We cleaned it, and decided to have nothing in the bottom of the cage. When I woke up, she had still urinated all over the bottom of the cage. I don't know what to do. Why isnt she urinating in her litter box? HELP!

Answer
At the risk of frustrating you, she is a ferret!  You are lucky that she poops in the litter box, but she is also fairly young.  Make sure that any bedding in her cage is actual bedding, like blankets etc and not small animal bedding as that can bother their airways.  Also make sure you are using a ferret safe litter, like newspaper.  They tend to dig in litter boxes so it is important to use a dust free litter.  Now, place bedding etc in the cage where she sleeps and on the bottom of the cage as usually (really, usually) they won't use the bathroom where they sleep.  So, towels and t-shirts to see if that helps.  If not, place the litter from the litterbox on the bottom on the cage until she sees it as a litter box then you can try a litter pan in the bottom to help.
