Boric Acid and Ferrets

Question
Okay, we just moved into our new home, and today, when we spoke to the previous owner, he informed us that he had sprinkled a light layer of boric acid into the carpets and then vacuumed it up a few days before we moved in. Apparently he was concerned about fleas because he had owned a dog. My question is, if he put the boric acid on the carpet, even if it's vacuumed, would it be safe for me to let my ferrets run around on the ground? my little ferts would be devastated if their house play was not safe!  I have read a lot of varying reports on the safety of boric acid for pets and children. I have ferrets, cats and two dogs. Any advice?

Answer
Hello David,

I found varying reports in my research as well.  I would say be careful, especially with the ferrets.  I always tell people NEVER to use any sort of flea power on ferrets.  This is because it is often NOT meant for ferrets (meaning it's safety was never tested on them) so the harmful effects are not known.  Just like you CANNOT put canine Advantix on a cat (it causes seizures), the same could potentially happen to your ferret.  Also, your ferrets are lower to the ground and more likely to breathe in the dust from the carpet.  I would be very careful with your kids.

If you want a definite answer, here is the number to the ASPCA animal poison control.  It is a good number to keep on the fridge in case of an emergency.

There is a $60 consult fee, but that will get you the answer you need from board certified animal toxin specialists.

I really wish I could be of more help, but I really I found too many conflicting answers to be certain =(
