Question
Hi Cynthia I work at a pet store and just have a few simple questions I'm not getting from books. First off how long do ferrets live? And as for their diet, weve been feeding them dry food and dry food only. Now they are babies and yes we soak them in water for easier digestion but when there sent home can they eat other things? And if so at what age can they start? These guys have been very popular lately and I'd like to learn more. Ive read a couple books and skimmed the internet a bit but am very committed to this site. Anyway any information you have and any further information would greatly be appreciated. Thank you

Answer
Hello Jordan!

Thank you for being an educated pet store employee!  It is very important to know about the critters you offer for sale.

Ferrets live between 6-10 years, with most living about 8.  There are ferrets that make it into their early teens, although this is very rare.

Diet is THE most IMPORTANT thing for keeping a ferret healthy and happy.  Most ferret-specific foods are not very healthy, and rather certain high quality cat food is MUCH better for them.  Never give any sugary treats, since it can put too much stress on the pancreas and cause insulinoma.

Here is a past question I have answered regarding diet.  Please take a peek and pass the information onto any ferret owners.  Most do not realize brands like Marshall Farms are fairly low quality and can lead to a shortened life and health problems!

It depends on the age of the ferrets you have as to when they can eat solid hard kibble without water.  At about 8 weeks of age they should be entirely onto solid, hard foods.  When in doubt, it never hurts to make a mushy gruel.  It won't hurt them to be on it for longer than needed!
