Question
I have recently adopted my ferrets about 6 months ago, they didn't tell me how old they were and was wandering if there was a way to be able to tell.

Answer
Hello Kayla,

Congrats on the new additions to your family!  More ferrets means more fun!

It is very difficult to determine the age of any animal.  Usually you can get an idea by looking at their teeth and the buildup of tarter and plaque.  Generally, mouths get increasingly worse as the pet ages (provided they have not had a dental).  A ferret with minor tarter buildup might be around a year-2 years old, moderate between 3-5.  A great amount of plaque would indicate 5+ years.

There are other things to look for that might help place his age a bit more accurately.  How is his coat?  Ferrets will "gray-out" like most older animals.  They usually begin to show white hairs on their limbs/tail at around 5-6 years old.  Obviously, this method will not work for an albino/Silver, or black-eyed white!  But if he is a sable and showing signs of graying, this would place him as an older adult.

If in doubt, ask your veterinarian when you bring them in for a checkup and shots.  He or she might be able to give you a better idea.

I hope this has answered your question.  If not please feel free to ask!
