Question
i have never owned a erret before but i think i am doing a good job, i havr read a lot of articles about them but never heard of this. my ferret Juneau is about 8month to a year old and its a boy, when i let him out of his cage he will take some of his food and "hide" it in my shoe and or my g/f's shoes whats up with that

Answer
Hi Dale:

That is very typical 'stashing' behavior for ferrets. It only seems funny to their humans when they find it - especially in their shoes! :-)

Dale, if you really love Juneau, you will READ and LEARN a LOT about ferrets - the MANY things that are dangerous for them to be around (anything rubber, insoles of shoes, foam rubber, pencil erasers and LOTS of other things are deadly!). It's really really important that you learn to ferretproof the areas in your home where Juneau play so he cannot get ahold of things such as getting underneath a couch, getting in shoes - and always, always, give ferretlax or cat laxative (malt flavor) about an inch ribbon once a week or MORE to keep their intestines from collecting things they shouldn't be eating and saving yourself about a $1,000 surgery to remove those items if your ferret gets an intestinal blockage.

You need to know the symptoms of an intestinal blockage, and many other things if you own a ferret.  He is trusting you to keep him safe and happy and you can only do that if you are INFORMED - very very well informed!!  I recommend the book:  FERRETS FOR DUMMIES by Kim SChilling...you can get it on eBay or half.com very reasonably.  You can also do a LOT of reading here:  http://www.ferretcentral.org and click on FAQs and just keep reading....there is so much I can't possibly put it in one post to you.  Please, if you want Juneau to live a long and happy life, READ it for him?

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
