Questionok I got a ferret for my birthday from my mom and I've had falkar for about 7 months now. and I was just wondering how do you tell the sex of ferrets, and the age as well. oh also do ferrets go into heat? and someone once told me that ferrets are more prone to diseases?
if you know any of these answers please help me out =)
AnswerHi congrats on the ferret I love the name.
To sex a ferret look the the belly if it looks like your ferret has a belly button then it is a male and that is not a belly button. If it is a female then no belly button.
Ferrets do go into season if they are not spay or neutered. If your ferret was purchased at a pet store it is likely a Marshall, Path Valley Farms or another large ferret distributor and was spay or neutered before arriving at the store. If you are outside the US I am not sure about their ferret distributors and whether or not they spay and neuter.
A female in heat is very noticeable since they do bleed and their vuvla swells a lot. If you do have a female who is not spay and she goes into heat it is very dangerous since female ferrets do not go out of heat until bred or getting a "jill jab" from the vet. She would need to be spayed as soon as possible.
Non altered male ferrets are very large and become very smelly and aggressive when in season. Their coat takes on a greasy feeling and they have testicles.
