Introducing a new boy

Question

Vlad
Hi,
I currently own two ferrets, Freyja (7 month sprite)  and Odin (9 month gib) - but rescue and have been living together for 2 months.

At the moment I am currently trying to introduce Vlad another rescue ferret (around 2 year gib) to them.

They've met three times now.  My two really don't seem very interested or bothered by Vlad, there where no puffed up tails, and only the occasional sniff up the bum (when they could get close enough).

Vlad is a different matter.  Vlad doesn't have a puffed-up tail either but the minute he sees either one of mind he simply goes in to bite the scruff and drag them wherever he can.  At first, Odin sent him running but now Odin just wants to get away from Vlad, as does Freyja. There hasn't been any blood, but you can see the bite marks left by Vlad.

At the moment Vlad lives in a cage next to my two, i've been swapping over so they can get used to each others smells.  They only ever meet outside the cages in the ferret-proof room.

I don't know whether Vlad has ever lived with other ferrets, but he clearly hasn't been handled as his is terrified of me (and his previous owner) picking him up. he also jumps at any noise.  This also makes introducing them difficult as pulling him off one of them would be very very difficult if things got any worse.

If you could offer me some advice, because i'm not sure whether to let Vlad sort out his issues with my two - it is difficult to watch as they just wanna run away.  Do i call it a day?  Or should i continue to attempt to handle him and hope his temperament improves?  His previous owner has argreed to take him back if things do not work out between them, but Vlad doesn't get any time from this owner so i'd rather not do that if i can help it.  However i really can't keep him if he won't get along with my to.

Any support you can give would be very welcome,
Abbie

Answer
It seem like you are on the right track except for swapping their smells as this can sometimes make the aggression worse - its like smelling an intruder but never being able to deal with it.  I would say that you need to work with Vlad in order to help him trust you and feel comfortable around you and when you introduce them again, work with all 3 at one time as sometimes that can help.  Also try a new area, especially one that is new to Vlad.
