Question
Hi I am considering ferrets as pets but have a few questions first...

My perants say they smell bad but I was wondering that if I kept them in my bedroom with the door closed would there be any smell else where in the house? If I change the litter pan daily & clean the rest of the cage twice weekly will there be any smell throught the house? will my room smell really bad? For the ferret body odor could I use some marshall ferret deodorriser or some dry bathe powder? Also I'll be using yesterdays news fresh scent cat litter for the litter pan (this is a pelleted paper product) will this control smells? the bedding elsewhrer in the cage will be old T-shirts & pants, if they decide they want to chew on there bedding I can use the yesterdays news everywhere.

I will be fedding them nutrance kitten food or actrium-1 kitten food both these foods are high in meat and contain no by-products will either of these be good? How much will one ferret eat daily?

How long do ferrets live on avrage?

Answer
hello,

There is really nothing you can do about the smell, on my ferrets i use the ferret deodorizer and it helps but not fully.  NO matter what you do ferrets are always going to smell, the cage wont if you change it often and the litter, its just the ferret its self that smells! But if you keep your door closed the smell shouldnt affect the rest of your house..THe smell isnt all that bad, and you get used to it! i have soo many ferrets i would know!! The litter might help, but im not really sure if that affects it. OK heres the deal about the cat food, cat food always doesnt have the right nutrients ferrets need, But what i do is in pet stores they have ferret food despensers and i just buy a couple pounds, and i buy cat food...I mainly feed the ferrets Cat food but i sprinkle some ferret food on top, so they can still get the nutrients they need. They eat 1-2 times daily.  Ferrets live from 6-12 years.
