weight gain

Question
Hi there. I just wanted to ask if you know of a good way to help a FAT ferret lose some weight. He's about 4 or 5 and just started gaining weight this winter. I wasn't too worried and thought it may just be seasonal, but his big old belly is dragging on the floor (and litter box-ewww!). He's still eating the same amount as before and he's always been rather lazy, but we've been working on that and his energy levels are back to normal, but still he's fat... I'd like to slim him down, but I don't want to make him miserable or risk his health...what to do?

Answer
Hi Nicky,
Are you sure he's just over weight?  Have you felt his tummy to see if there is an enlarged Adrenal Gland?  What kind of food is he on.  You can't really deny them food as it should be kept down at all times.  No treats though if you want him to lose.  Personally, I would much rather have a little weight on a ferret than too little as they lose it very fast when they become ill.
