asthma and dogs/ferrets

Question
I am looking for suggestions on medium sized breeds, that are better for children with asthma.  I understand dogs with hair vs. fur is better, and dogs that shed less and/or have less dander are optimal.  Any suggestions?  Prefer a dog that is 20 to 40 pounds, when full grown!  We also would consider getting a ferret, if this would be better for the childrens asthma.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Barbara,

Your solution is pretty simple. First, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to research breeds of dogs, cats and ferrets to make sure of the right temperament for your family. What good is having a pet to love that does not aggravate allergies/asthma if they are a poor fit for your family personality wise? Would you want a dog that needs so much exercise that you could not possibly keep it up? A cat that has a foul temperament? A ferret that is to crafty and ends up lost outside or in the wall because of a hole in the wall you did not know existed?

After you have narrowed your field down to the right pet, then go to a pet store or shelter (please do not buy from a pet store, rescue groups need you) and let your kids handle the different species/breeds and see if the pet you want caused allergic reactions. If you want to avoid the pressure of taking the kids to the pet store or shelter -- you know the "mom can we get him NOW" type pressure then you can always you by yourself and "pet" the animals with individual pieces of cloth to take home and "test" on the family!

A good resource for ferret information would be the book "Ferrets for Dummies" by Kim Schilling. It is about $20 but the best $20 you'll spend regardless of if you decide a ferret is right for your family or not. It gives good advice and info. on all aspects of ferret care, etc. and can help you determine if ferrets are good for you in all areas of family life.

Good luck!
